Stop the Dakota Access Pipeline!
Right now, communities across Iowa are in a pitched battle against the fossil fuel industry. At stake is ANOTHER massive oil pipeline cutting across the heartland of the United States. It’s called the ‘Dakota Access’ pipeline and, if built, would further incentivize decades of Bakken shale oil development.
Dakota Access is a major pipeline that, if fully built, would transport up to 570,000 barrels of fracked crude shale oil from North Dakota through to Illinois where it would then be put onto rail cars headed for Gulf Coast refineries. The segment through Iowa currently up for discussion would be an essential arm of this pipeline.
Bakken oil has been deemed by the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration as more flammable and severely dangerous to ship by rail, and is even more difficult to clean up in the event of a spill.
This isn’t a choice between trains and pipelines. It’s a choice between a sane energy future and climate disaster. We need to be doubling down on wind and solar, two things Iowa has in abundance, instead of building new hazardous fossil fuel infrastructure.
Support Iowans and join us in saying no to Bakken crude and to the Dakota Access Pipeline.
